Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate is the finish we recommend most often when a client wants concrete that looks considered rather than purely functional. The surface mortar is washed back to reveal the stone within the mix, giving a textured, decorative finish that is naturally slip resistant and hides everyday marks far better than plain grey concrete.

WHERE IT WORKS

Exposed aggregate suits driveways, paths, patios, alfresco areas, porches and pool surrounds. Its slip resistance makes it particularly strong around pools and on sloping driveways, and its speckled surface keeps looking clean in high traffic areas where plain concrete shows tyre marks and stains.

BLENDS AND FINISHES

The character of the finish comes from the aggregate blend: the stone colour, size and mix proportion, paired with the cement colour behind it. We help you select a blend against your home’s palette, and we advise honestly on what will and will not date well. Once cured, the surface is sealed to deepen the colour and protect against stains, with resealing recommended every few years to keep it at its best.

THE CRITICAL PART

Exposed aggregate is unforgiving of poor timing. The window for exposing the stone depends on weather, mix and surface area, and missing it ruins the finish permanently. This is genuinely a specialist’s finish, and it is one of the reasons clients choose a licensed concreter over the cheapest quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, moderately. The decorative mix costs more than standard grey concrete and the exposure and sealing stages add labour. Against that, it is more forgiving of stains and wear, adds more to street appeal and property value, and avoids the ongoing maintenance of pavers. Most clients find the difference well worth it on visible areas like driveways and entertaining spaces.

No, the opposite. The exposed stone gives the surface natural texture, which is why it is one of the most popular finishes for pool surrounds and sloped driveways in Queensland. The sealer we use is chosen to protect the surface without making it slick.

Very little is needed: an occasional wash to remove dirt and leaf matter, prompt cleaning of oil spills, and resealing roughly every two to four years depending on traffic and sun exposure. Resealing is a quick, inexpensive job that keeps the colour rich and the surface protected.
