The most common complaint we hear about a pool surround is that it ponds water, and almost every time the cause is the same: the falls were never set properly, or the surround was laid on bedding sand that has since moved. Water that cannot drain sits against the coping, stains the surface, breeds slippery growth and works its way underneath, which is what lifts pavers and cracks slabs. Relaying the same surface on the same base simply repeats the failure in a few summers. When we quote a replacement we price correcting the base and the drainage, not just a new surface on top, because that is the part that determines whether the new surround lasts.
