Concrete Driveways

A driveway is the hardest working slab on a residential property. It carries vehicle loads daily, sits fully exposed to Queensland weather and shapes the first impression of your home. High Calibre Concrete Construction builds driveways that perform structurally and finish cleanly, because we control every stage ourselves: site cut and preparation, formwork, steel reinforcement, pour, finish and curing.

FINISH OPTIONS

We offer plain grey concrete for a clean, economical result, coloured concrete through the mix for consistent tone that will not wear off, exposed aggregate for a decorative, slip resistant surface, and stencilled or covered finishes where you want pattern without pavers. Every option is discussed against your budget, the fall of the block and how the driveway meets the street.

HOW WE BUILD IT

Driveways are poured at a minimum of 100 mm thickness on compacted base, with steel mesh reinforcement and 25 to 32 MPa concrete specified to suit the load. Control joints are cut to manage shrinkage cracking, falls are set so water sheds away from the house and garage, and the slab is cured properly rather than rushed. Where your driveway crosses the footpath, we manage the council crossover requirements with the relevant local authority.

WHY IT MATTERS

Most driveway failures we are called to replace come from thin slabs, missing reinforcement or poor subgrade preparation, none of which are visible on the day of handover. As a QBCC licensed and fully insured contractor we build to the standard the licence requires, and we are accountable for the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

For standard cars, 100 mm on a properly compacted base with steel mesh reinforcement is the accepted minimum. Where heavier vehicles such as caravans, boats or trucks will use the driveway we increase the thickness and reinforcement to suit the load, and we will tell you plainly which specification your situation needs.

The section of driveway on your own property generally does not need approval, but the crossover, the section between your boundary and the road, is council controlled. Requirements differ between councils across SE QLD. We identify what your local authority requires and manage that step as part of the job.

Keep vehicles off the slab for a minimum of seven days. Concrete continues gaining strength for around 28 days, so we also recommend keeping heavy vehicles off it for the first month. Foot traffic is generally fine after 24 to 48 hours. We confirm timing for your specific pour and weather conditions at handover.
